OVERCOMING FOMO
FOMO- Fear Of Missing Out
FOMO is a syndrome mostly found in young adults. It’s basically social anxiety which results from the fear of missing out on opportunities or any form of social activity.
FOMO and social media go hand in hand. People take their time to tailor their posts on social media to show the best part of their lives. Looking at these posts you can’t tell what’s really going on in their lives or what battle they may be fighting. However, there are people who see the glamorous lifestyle and relationships being displayed and begin to let insecurities creep in.
There are a lot of things that make people feel insecure and it’s different for everyone. Sometimes we don’t even realize that we’re letting social media dictate what should or shouldn’t make us happy.
Two months ago I accidentally broke my phone and the first few weeks were the hardest. I had to start using my old phone and I was so worried about how I’d be able to keep up with what’s happening online and how I’ll manage to create contents (my laptop is bad too).
After getting the price to fix my phone I realized I’ll be stuck with my old phone for a while because the price was so high that I might as well just add a little more and get a new phone. I just decided to stop complaining and worrying. I acknowledged my predicament and got all the apps I needed on my old phone and started doing the much I could. I’ve been able to write quite a number of articles with this phone. It made me realize how much time I spend online and how it can affect me whenever I don’t have access to the internet.
There are a lot of people who have made bad decisions and are in toxic relationships because of FOMO and some other insecurities. Here are few tips I think would help to fight against it;
MAKE REAL CONNECTIONS
Sometimes it’s good to just leave social media and go back to good old phone calls and text messages. It’s very important to have real connections with people rather than being in an unending imaginary ‘slay battle’. There are people around you who if you just pay attention to, could give important pointers to help you achieve your goals.
Don’t waste your time trying to get people to love you. Spend your time with those who already do.
LIVE IN THE PRESENT
There’s nothing wrong with making plans for the future but that shouldn’t make us blind to what we already have in hand. Instead of worrying so much about what will happen tomorrow why not work very hard today so that you’ll be able to relax knowing that a good foundation has been laid for your future.
APPRECIATE THE PROCESS
Sometimes we forget that we’re not going to achieve certain things the same time as others. The most important thing is that you’re putting in work and being consistent. You never know when you’ll get your big break. Just keep doing what you know how to do best and stop setting unrealistic goals because of the things you see online. Celebrate every little success because you worked hard for it. Never down play any of your achievements.
LOVE YOURSELF
Once you acknowledge the fact that you’re the best version of yourself, you would never want to be like someone else. I’m one of those people who are not scared to be called weird. If being weird makes me happy, then weird I’ll forever be. You need to realize that no one can love you better than you.
I made this post as a friendly reminder that you’re amazing. Yes, you! Don’t stop doing what you love. You can also check out similar posts by Annie Barrie and Chinwe
Happy New Month and I pray we all live our best lives for the rest of the year.
